Retinal Detachment
Definition
Retinal detachment is a serious eye condition that occurs when the retina (the light-sensitive tissue lining the back of the eye) separates from its normal position. When this happens, the retina loses access to oxygen and nutrients, which can lead to permanent vision loss if not treated promptly. Retinal detachment is considered a medical emergency.
Types of Retinal Detachment
1. Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment
- The most common type.
- Occurs when a tear or hole develops in the retina, allowing fluid from the vitreous to collect behind the retina and separate it from the underlying tissue.
2. Tractional Retinal Detachment
- Occurs when scar tissue on the retina pulls it away from the back of the eye.
- Commonly associated with diabetic retinopathy.
3. Exudative Retinal Detachment
- Occurs when fluid builds up behind the retina without a retinal tear.
- May result from inflammation, leaking blood vessels, tumors, or other eye diseases.
Causes and Risk Factors
Causes
The most common causes of retinal detachment include:
- Aging-related changes in the vitreous gel inside the eye
- Retinal tears or holes
- Eye injuries or trauma
- Scar tissue from diabetic retinopathy
- Eye inflammation or vascular disorders causing fluid buildup
Risk Factors
You are at increased risk if you have:
- A previous retinal detachment in either eye
- A family history of retinal detachment
- Severe nearsightedness (high myopia)
- Prior eye surgery, especially cataract surgery
- Significant eye trauma or injury
- Diabetic retinopathy or other retinal diseases
- Age over 40 years
Symptoms
Retinal detachment is usually painless, but warning signs often appear suddenly.

Treatment
Treatment depends on whether there is a retinal tear or a complete retinal detachment.
Laser Photocoagulation (Retinopexy)
- Used for retinal tears before detachment occurs.
- Creates scar tissue that seals the tear and keeps the retina attached.
Cryopexy (Freezing Treatment)
- A freezing probe creates a scar around the retinal tear to secure the retina.
Pneumatic Retinopexy
- A gas bubble is injected into the eye to help push the detached retina back into place.
Vitrectomy
- Removes the vitreous gel and any scar tissue pulling on the retina.
- The eye is then filled with a gas or oil bubble to support retinal healing.
Scleral Buckle Surgery
- A silicone band is placed around the outside of the eye to help reattach the retina and reduce traction.
Prevention
Although not all cases can be prevented, risk may be reduced by:
- Receiving prompt treatment for retinal tears
- Managing diabetes effectively to prevent diabetic retinopathy
- Protecting the eyes from injury during sports and high-risk activities
