Definition

Diabetic retinopathy is a diabetes-related eye disease that occurs when high blood sugar damages the blood vessels in the retina (the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye). It is one of the leading causes of vision loss and blindness in people with diabetes.

Types/Stages

  1. Non-Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (NPDR)
    • Early stage of the disease.
    • Retinal blood vessels weaken, swell, and leak fluid or blood into the retina. 
  2. Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (PDR)
    • Advanced stage of the disease.
    • New abnormal blood vessels grow on the retina and can bleed into the eye, causing severe vision loss.
